These sites already exist and are good examples of the web being put to work for the people by the people.

FixMyStreet

FixMyStreet is a site to help people report, view, or discuss local problems they’ve found to their local council by simply locating them on a map. It launched in beta early February 2007. They are reported to the relevant council by email. The council can then resolve the problem the way they normally would. Alternatively, you can discuss the problem on the website with others, and then together lobby the council to fix it, or fix it directly yourselves.

PledgeBank

PledgeBank allows people to set up pledges and then encourages others to sign up to them. A pledge is a statement of the form 'I will do something, if a certain number of people will help me do it'. The creator of the pledge then publicises their pledge and encourages people to sign up. Two outcomes are possible – either the pledge fails to get enough subscribers before it expires (in which case, PledgeBank contact everyone and tell them 'better luck next time'), or, the better possibility, the pledge attracts enough people that they are all sent a message saying 'Well done—now get going!'

Sustainable Community Action wiki

Sustainability for all, especially ordinary citizens and community groups. Worldwide. Mostly English, but beginnings in other languages. Joining it all up - global to local, topic by topic - environmental, social and economic wellbeing, over time, and across different types of content. Why build Sustainable Community Action wiki?, more about SCA wiki

  • Founded December 2004 by Phil Green. Hosting by Wikia means we are part of a much wider and richer community of wiki. Uses MediaWiki, as do Wikipedia and sister projects.

TheyWorkForYou

TheyWorkForYou is Hansard made useful. A 'value-added' Hansard, if you like. Originally built almost entirely by volunteers, the website aims to make it easy for people to keep tabs on their elected and unelected representatives in Parliament, and other assemblies. Not only is it simple, easy and fascinating but also, if you want it, they'll give you the source code!

LGSearch

LGSearch is a Google CSE based search engine for the public sector, providing a number of ways of searching public sector websites in the UK. Developed by Dave Briggs originally for local government use.
